How to keep up with fitness over the festive season

As we know, this time of year becomes increasingly busy with family, friends, work dinners, social gatherings, the list is endless!

So, it’s no surprise that our fitness routine takes a back slide. We know how frustrating this can feel when you have worked so hard on your fitness goals all year.

We wanted to give you four simple tips to help keep you active over the festive period.

Four ways to stay active over the festive season

1. Plan

Planning is essential, especially this time of year. Make sure you plan and think ahead to fit in your favourite workouts. If you know you are going Christmas shopping on Thursday afternoon, plan a run/walk/bike whatever workout feels good for you in the morning. That way it’s over and done with and you can enjoy your festive afternoon.

2.  Switch up your workouts

You don’t have to stick to the same routine, try something different that fits into your schedule. Maybe go ice skating, it’s a great way to work on balance and core strength! Or go on a long winter’s walk. If you are a keen runner, wrap up extra warm and head out for an early morning run, it’s a great way to set yourself up for the day.  One of our personal favourites this time of year is working out from home! There are so many great exercise videos out there for you to follow along to in the comfort of your own home. No wasting valuable time travelling to the gym, but you still get the heart racing and endorphins flowing.

3. Keep hydrated and don’t skip meals

The festive season can be a boozy one, with Christmas parties, family gatherings and friends. But you still need to keep hydrated. And no, a Baileys hot chocolate doesn’t count! Make sure you are still hitting your water targets for the day – at least 6-8 cups are recommended. Don’t skip meals either, this puts your body into overdrive, leaving you feeling ravenous and overeating, causing bloating and just feeling uncomfortable.

4. Be realistic

And possibly the most important one: be realistic! Let’s be honest, it is winter after all. There will be days you sit in your pjs, watching films and eating chocolate and that is okay! Don’t beat yourself up. It’s just as important to rest and recover as it is to exercise, so make sure you take some time off over the holidays to enjoy it and let your body recuperate.

Enjoy the festive season

Take this time of year to enjoy doing different things and be creative in the way you exercise. Remember, the festive season is only a short period, you will get back to your normal routine in no time. So, enjoy the break and spend time with the ones you love. Remember to use to take inspiration from some of the tips above to help keep your fitness on track.
